In 2018, in order to broaden the scope of action of the BIAL Foundation and to recognise the most remarkable and relevant findings in the biomedical field, the 300,000 euro BIAL Award in Biomedicine was created.

This award, which should take place in the odd years, thus alternating with the Prémio BIAL de Medicina Clínica, is intended to reward a work published in the last ten years, of biomedical nature, which results are considered of exceptional quality and scientific relevance.

Only works nominated by members of the Jury, members of the Scientific Board of the BIAL Foundation, previous BIAL Award winners, and scientific societies may be considered candidates for the BIAL Award in Biomedicine. The Jury may also invite other scientific institutions to submit nominations.

The BIAL Award in Biomedicine has the patronage of the President of the Portuguese Republic, the Council of Rectors of Portuguese Universities and the European Medical Association.

It should be noted that two of the scientists who won the 2021 edition of the BIAL Award in Biomedicine, Katalin Karikó and Drew Weissman, were awarded the 2023 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for their discoveries that enabled the development of effective vaccines based on mRNA technology to prevent COVID-19.
